Every child has a story.

At Coastal Training, I believe every child has a story, an inner world and a unique essence that deserves to be seen, heard, understood and cherished. This Level 5 Diploma is for qualified counsellors who want to deepen their understanding of children and young people aged 8–18.

The course follows the child’s journey:

Module 1

Understanding the Child

Who is this child or young person?

This module provides practitioners with a theoretical foundation for understanding the developing child, exploring how experiences are held and expressed through the body and brain.

We will explore Bruce Perry's Neurosequential Model to understand how experiences shape the developing child, drawing on a range of theories, including polyvagal, attachment, psychodynamic and language theories, alongside the wider system surrounding the child.

Module 2

Understanding Their Experience

What is happening for this child or young person?

We will look beneath behaviour to understand the story and experience of the child.

Exploring for example trauma, loss, anxiety and OCD, self-harm, suicidal thoughts, neurodivergence, sensory differences and mental health, always holding the whole child in mind.

Module 3

Creative Integrative Therapeutic Practice

How can I respond?

We will bring together therapeutic knowledge, play, creativity, evidence-informed approaches, ethics and professional judgement to find a response that fits the child, their story and their needs.

This will include approaches such as sand tray, metaphor, therapeutic story, creative Gestalt, ecotherapy and creative CBT.
